Why Hope Ministry?

Our Story

The Hope ministry was started in March 2007 by an orphan called Eka and Dr Ladi Okoko. Originally, its mission was to support widows and orphans in battling HIV, however it became clear how financially limited they were.

Basics such as affording regular meals and paying school fees for children were impossible. The Ministry therefore set out to help widows and orphans move forward and live their lives by offering micro loans for small businesses and supporting with educational fees.

We started out creating 3 local support groups with the help of 4 volunteers who attended monthly. Now we have 22 groups with 10 volunteers!

Our Mission

We believe that tragedy doesn’t have to define someone’s future. We want to work towards a future where widows and orphans in Nigeria don’t just survive loss – they thrive beyond it. Our mission is to empower these most vulnerable people in society to move out of poverty and into self-sufficiency, as we are biblically called to do.

  • With the right support at the right time, people can change their life trajectory entirely. For example, having immediate relief when in crisis such as with food and finances. But support also means walking alongside people for the long term, offering education, training, and community connections that lead to lasting independence.

We're committed to:

  • Putting faith into action – living out James 1:27 through tangible, compassionate service
  • Dignity and empowerment – supporting people to rebuild their lives on their own terms, not creating dependency
  • Holistic support – addressing wide ranges of needs with practical, emotional, and spiritual needs together
  • Community strength – building networks where widows and orphans support each other
  • Education as foundation – ensuring children can stay in school and build their futures

Looking ahead, we’re working to expand our reach across Nigeria by partnering with more local churches, orphanages, and charities. We’re developing more support groups and empowerment programmes, and bringing more children through education. Our goal isn’t just to reach more people, but to create sustainable, community-led support systems that continue long into the future.

Every widow who becomes self-sufficient, every orphan who completes their education, every community that comes together in support – these are the building blocks of lasting change.

Our motto is at the heart of our work, and is taken from James 1 vs 27:

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world"

What we do

Our passion is sharing God's love so that we can help others.

WORKING WITH COMMUNITIES

We work with local and international interested groups or
individuals to show God’s love to widows and orphans in
Nigeria. Whilst The Hope Ministry is not a church, we can
work with any church or group willing.

PRACTICAL AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT

The Hope Ministry provides tailored workshops to establish
and build practical skills. We help build life skills through
training, loans and equipment where possible. Our aim is to
help them establish their own trade or business and be
self-sufficient.

EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT

We understand the importance of education. The Ministry
financially helps orphans, children and young people to
stay in education, with the aim of setting them up for
stable employment.

DEALING WITH LOSS

We provide emotional support and help orphans and
widows with moving forward with their lives.
